Does technology make people's lives simpler rather than more complicated?
As a double-edged sword, technology has frequently been brought to the center of heated debates. Some people argue that the advancement of modern science and technology has made life much simpler than before, while some others offer an opposite attitude, insisting that technology may cause trouble to and complicate their daily life. I would tend to express a neutral standpoint on this issue. That is to say, technology has made people's lives easier in some aspects,whereas it makes life more complicated in some other areas.
On the one hand, thanks to tremendous accomplishments of scientists in many fields, people's lives have been made much simpler than in the past. With easy clicks of the mouse, the striking speed of computers is vividly displayed.Complicated figures are accurately calculated and arranged, all while human brains are comfortably at rest, unneeded for these tasks. Thus, a large amount of trouble is avoided. Messages can be sent at ease through diversified technological
channels including telephone, computer, radio and television. Besides, the adoption of advanced machines has remarkably raised productivity. Specially-designed technological systems can tackle the most complex tasks in a short time. From a certain angle, human beings are made much lazier than before with t h e all-around application of technology. Furthermore, seldom do people use pens and paper to write articles or letters now, as it is more convenient to type words in almost any language. There is no longer a need to write in ink. Ironically, the most common handwriting today might be a person's signature.
On the other hand, excessive reliance on technological support may also bring forth unfavorable effects in people's daily lives. In the modern world, there have frequently been occurrences of power failures or technological crashes and breakdowns that prevent people from utilizing technology temporarily. As a consequence, humans might be trapped, with endless problems to be handled independently with their own brains and their own hands. All these troubles are far from simple to deal with. To illustrate, imagine that inside an office during working hours the electricity of the building suddenly goes out. The computers refuse to work and all other electricity-run equipment comes to a halt. What might be the aftermath of such an incident? Undoubtedly, many important tasks and projects will not be continued and the progress of work is also negatively affected. It is most likely that clerks have to wait until the networks recover, without doing anything practical and meaningful for a while. Delays of work would be unavoidable. With this in mind, technology indeed instills complicated troubles into people's lives.
It is a must to hold a rational attitude toward technology and make suitable use of it. People in the modern world can never live without the all-around assistance of technology; however, it does not mean that total reliance on it is completely necessary. Even technology itself is invented by human power and intelligence. As a result, while trying hard to master technological skills, human beings should also be conscious of the necessity to maintain and cultivate more primitive abilities. Only in this way could unwanted troubles be reduced to the largest extent possible.
Thereafter, the double-sided nature of technology has caused opposite impacts on people's lives under different
circumstances. In some cases, it indeed helps enhance living standards and makes life more convenient and comfortable;yet in some other aspects, technology may also become a source of complexity. With the purpose of letting it bring about the biggest benefits to the entire human race, all ordinary citizens should be fully aware of the importance of suitable technological applications.
